The musician on struggling to fit into his Britpop pants, his ambition to make big Frazzle, and the football music that retains him fed
Bassist Alex James, along with Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon and Dave Rowntree, shaped Blur in 1988. In 2023, Blur introduced out their ninth studio album, The Ballad of Darren, and performed two sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium. Alex began making cheese in 2003, and hosts an annual food and music event, the Massive Feastival, on his farm in the Cotswolds. He is married to Claire Neate and has 5 youngsters – Geronimo, twins Artemis and Gallileo, Sable and Beatrix. His e-book, Over the Rainbow, is his account of Blur’s reformation and tour in 2023.
Why Over the Rainbow?
I simply assume there was a correct sense of enchantment with Blur getting again together. It was magical. However it started with me cacking it on the M40 on the best way into London for that first assembly with the band, to see if we might do it… 4 stone obese, and simply considering: “What band doesn’t hate each other at this point?”
